    Why Make Healthy Bliss Balls?

With just 6 ingredients these Almond Bliss Balls are packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidents.

    • You can make them in under 10 minutes
    • You can buy all the ingredients at your local supermarket – no special trip to the health food store required.
    • They are low carb and free from refined sugars meaning they won’t give you sugar highs, followed shortly thereafter by the inevitable sugar low
    • They have the perfect amount of sweetness from the medjool dates
    • They freeze well if you’d like to make a double batch, or have a small household
    • They can be customized with additional flavours to suit your tastes

    Ingredient Notes

    • Medjool Dates: The secret ingredient that makes these bliss balls so good is the Medjool Dates.  Medjool dates  are larger than other types of dates, they’re softer and tend to have a rich caramel like taste.  They are by far the best type of date to use as a sweetener and are best brought to room temperature before making the bliss balls.
    • Almond Butter/Almond Spread: Are they the same thing? Basically yes, however do try to find one that has only almonds listed on the ingredient label and there are many different varieties that have other things added.
    • Coconut: Desicated coconut is best as it ads texture and sweetness to the balls.
    • LSA: This is a ground up mix of three things: linseeds, sunflower seeds and almonds.  It’s high in fibre and protein and is perfect for and extra energy boost in bliss balls. Its available from the baking aisle in supermarkets. Alternatively you could use Almond Meal.
    • Ground Cinnamon: for added flavour and its one of my favourites, however feel free to experiment with other spices if you don't have this on hand. Or leave it out entirely.
    • Cocoa Powder: For that chocolate richness that makes bliss balls sing. I love buying the unsweetened Cacao Powder yo find in the health food aisle at the supermarket as there is already heaps of sweetness from the dates and coconut.

(If you don't have a food processor, I've included tips below on how to make these without one)

    Expert Tips

    1. Dates: Let the dates soften to room temperature before taking out the seeds. The will make them easier to remove and they will blitz up better.  Medjool dates are available from the fruit and vegetable section of the supermarket.
    2. Checking labels for sugar: Whether you’re buying almond butter or almond spread, check the label for ingredients. Make sure the only thing listed is almonds.
    3. Spices: Instead of ground cinnamon, you could use the same amount of vanilla essence or vanilla paste, or even ground ginger. Steer away from cinnamon sugar as that will make the bliss balls too sweet.
    4. Freezing: Bliss Balls can be frozen in air tight containers for 4 weeks.  To thaw, bring to room temperature naturally.  Avoid microwaving if possible.

6 Ways to Customise Your Bliss Balls

    • Add 2 tablespoons of orange zest before blitzing
    • For an extra hit of spice, add ¾ teaspoon of ground chilli powder
    • Change the ground cinnamon to ground ginger and add a little freshly grated ginger
    • Add 2 tablespoons of sunflower seeds for extra texture
    • Hide a toasted hazelnut inside each bliss ball
    • Roll the bliss balls in Matcha powder, or finely chopped pistachios

    No Food Processor?

    • Soak Dates in hot water: Soak the dates in a little water (make sure the seeds are out)
    • Mash Dates in a bowl: squeeze all the water out using your hands or by pressing dates into a strainer. Transfer to a a bowl and press into a paste using the back of a large dessert spoon.
    • Add the rest of the ingredients into the bowl and use your hands to mix together.
